The Rehabilitation Center at Noah’s Ark
Here in our rehabilitation center, located on the first floor of Noah’s Ark Veterinary and Boarding Resort, we are proud to offer a multitude of scientifically proven rehabilitative modalities for companion animals.
We are home to one of the most innovative therapeutic class IV cold laser systems available worldwide and are able to work with a number of conditions including orthopedic issues, non-healing wounds, aural hematomas, atopic dermatitis, lick granulomas (“hot spots”), chronic otitis, rhinitis, gingivitis, cystitis, and more.
We also offer hydrotherapy through the utilization of an underwater treadmill; this form of therapy is highly recommended by veterinarians for a wide range of orthopedic concerns, as well as a great source of exercise for physical conditioning and weight loss.
Other modalities potentially implemented include therapeutic ultrasound, electrical stimulation (both Neuromuscular Electric Stimulation and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), as well as physical exercise regimens which utilize physical therapy equipment.
If you don’t find what you are looking for here on our website, please contact our rehabilitation department directly. We will be more than happy to assist you with any questions or concerns regarding your pet’s injuries and recovery, or any other questions you may have.
Pet hydrotherapy is one of the most effective methods of physical therapy. Underwater treadmills offer a tremendous amount of variability, including speed, water depth, and jet resistance; these factors are adjusted to best suit each individual case. Studies have shown with hydrotherapy, animals recovering from surgery or injury heal up to 60 percent faster than with other therapeutic methods. How? Well…
- The buoyancy provided by water lessens the weight-bearing load on an animal’s limbs; this helps reduce pain and limit the stress put on bones and joints.
- The pressure distributed by the water decreases inflammation and improves circulation.
- By changing the water level, resistance and buoyancy, we can target individual muscle groups and injuries to build muscle volume/lose weight in a safe, low-impact manner.
- Water temperature can be changed to help your pet relax and further alleviate pain; increasing overall flexibility and range of motion.
Hydrotherapy is most often used to treat:
- Gait Disruption
- Muscle Stiffness
- Muscle Atrophy
- Range-of-Motion Loss
- Spinal Injury
- Hip Dysplasia
- Weight Loss
- Coordination Disorders
- Overall Physical Deterioration
- General Conditioning
- Intensive Conditioning for Canine Athletes
- Nerve Damage/Deficiencies
- Post-Operative Rehabilitation Patients
Our AquaPaws treadmill here at Noah’s Ark can also be run as a dry treadmill; though some of the benefits of hydrotherapy would not apply, that is still an excellent source of exercise for many patients. Muscle conditioning using hydrotherapy is not only an effective way of building up cardiovascular strength and endurance, but patients often find it fun as well!
Laser therapy assists the body with its natural healing process by utilizing photobiomodulation to provide accelerated cellular regeneration and tissue repair, deep musculoskeletal pain relief, reduction of inflammation, improved capillary growth (to increase circulation) and regenerated nerve function. It can also be utilized as an alternative to surgery in some instances. We are home to the latest in cutting edge class IV cold laser therapy technology and house the newest machine in veterinary medicine, the CTX by Companion Laser.
Laser therapy is effective in treating a wide spectrum of conditions, such as…
- Acute and Chronic Pain
- Post-Operative Healing
- Certain Abdominal Disorders
- Aural Hematomas
- Anal Sacculitis
- Gingivitis/Periodontal Disease
- Perianal Fistulas
- Pyotraumatic Dermatitis
- Certain Thoracic Disorders
- Certain Urinary Tract Disorders
- Wounds and Burns
Many musculoskeletal and neurologic conditions can result in weakness, pain, decreased range of motion, loss of coordination, decreased endurance, and difficulty with normal daily activities. There are many indications for therapeutic exercises and numerous exercises that one can utilize to accomplish this.
Our rehabilitation center carries several different types of therapeutic equipment such as:
- Balance Boards
- Cavaletti Poles
Electrical Stimulation (E-Stim), also known as neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), is the delivery of mild, low-level electrical current and electric impulses, which elicit muscle contraction and stimulation of superficial nerve fibers. E-Stim is used therapeutically for pain management, to prevent muscle atrophy following surgery or injury, and to selectively increase muscle strength. It is also used for neuromuscular regeneration. Here at Noah’s Ark we can apply TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), which stimulates nerves and assists in controlling pain through the release of endorphins, as well as NMES.
Some benefits of electrotherapy are:
- Enhanced Muscle Performance
- Increased Range of Motion
- Reduction of Edema
- Muscle Re-Education/Conditioning
- Increased Strength
- Pain Control
Therapeutic ultrasound is the use of sound waves for deep tissue healing. This is great for musculoskeletal injuries including conditions that affect joint mobility, chronic arthritis, and various soft tissue injuries such as muscle strains, muscle tears, and tendon injuries. The benefits of therapeutic ultrasound are:
- Increased Range of Motion
- Increased Localized Circulation
- Reduced Wound Healing Time
- Decreased Scar Tissue Formation
- Decreased Pain And Inflammation
